What is Acne?

Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with dead skin cells, oil, and bacteria. It usually appears as red or inflamed bumps on the skin, known as pimples or zits. Acne can affect various parts of the body, but it is most commonly seen on the face, chest, back, and shoulders.

Causes of Acne?

Hormonal Changes

Hormonal fluctuations, such as those that occur during puberty, menstrual cycles, pregnancy, or certain medical conditions (e.g., polycystic ovary syndrome), can trigger or worsen acne.

Inflammation

When the hair follicles become inflamed due to bacterial growth and clogging, they lead to the characteristic red and swollen appearance of pimples.

Diet

While the relationship between diet and acne is not entirely clear, some studies suggest that high-glycemic diets (those that contain sugary or processed foods) and dairy consumption may play a role in exacerbating acne for some individuals.

Medications

Certain medications, such as corticosteroids, androgenic steroids, or some antiepileptic drugs, can cause or worsen acne as a side effect.

Stress

While stress does not directly cause acne, it can worsen existing acne due to its influence on hormonal fluctuations.

Cosmetic and Hair Products

Some cosmetic and hair care products contain ingredients that can clog pores and contribute to acne formation, especially if they are used excessively or not suitable for an individual’s skin type.

What is Acne Scars?

Acne scars are permanent marks or indentations that develop on the skin as a result of severe or prolonged acne. When acne lesions (such as pimples, cysts, or nodules) penetrate deep into the skin and damage the surrounding tissue, the body’s natural healing process may not fully repair the affected area, leading to the formation of scars.

  • Topical treatments: Some creams or gels containing retinoids, vitamin C, or alpha hydroxy acids can help stimulate collagen production and improve the texture of the skin.
  • Chemical peels: Chemical peels involve applying a chemical solution to the skin, which causes it to exfoliate and eventually peel off, leading to the growth of new, smoother skin.
  • Microneedling: This procedure uses tiny needles to create controlled micro-injuries in the skin, promoting collagen production and skin remodeling.
  • Laser therapy: Certain laser treatments can help stimulate collagen production and improve the appearance of acne scars.
  • Dermal fillers: Injecting fillers into atrophic scars can help raise them to the level of the surrounding skin.
  • It’s essential to consult a dermatologist to determine the most appropriate treatment based on the type and severity of acne scars. Early intervention and proper management of acne can also help minimize the risk of scarring.

FAQ

Most frequent questions and answers
  • You might have heard that eating greasy foods, dairy or sweets can contribute to acne. For the most part, that’s not true. The main trigger of acne are the hormones that stimulate the oil glands and produce sebum, which clogs or blocks pores. Bacteria grows inside those pores and they become inflamed, resulting in breakouts. Major hormonal changes happen no matter what you eat. Common causes of hormonal changes include the teenage years (puberty) and menstrual cycles. What you eat might impact your acne a bit, though. Studies have found that consuming high amounts simply sugars and non-fat dairy products could increase your severity of acne.
  • Makeup doesn’t necessarily cause acne, but it can impact it. If you suffer from acne, you don’t necessarily need to stop wearing makeup altogether. If you suspect your foundation is causing problem, you might want to try switching to another brand or using a different type of makeup. Don’t forget about other products that may be getting on your face, shampoos, hairsprays or hair gels can be responsible for contributing to breakouts on your forehead and temples. The best thing to do is to look for brands and types of makeup and other cosmetic products that are labeled “noncomedogenic.” That means they won’t clog your pores!
  • Having acne is rarely a result of an under washed face. In fact, many people with acne actually over-wash their face. Sometimes washing your face too much can make things worse. If you scrub too hard, you could aggravate your acne. Also, certain alcohol-based astringents could be drying your skin too much. With that being said, washing your face with water and a gentle cleanser every night is beneficial. However, most cases of acne require more than just keeping your face clean.
  • Yes. Acne does not only discriminate based on age. The reason that many teenagers get acne is because their condition is triggered by rising hormones of puberty. You may be experiencing adult acne from hormonal fluctuations due to pregnancy, menstrual cycles, or menopause. You can also develop acne as a side effect from certain hormone-containing medications like birth control and testosterone supplements or other medications like steroids or seizure medication. Some adult men and women will continue to produce acne simply because their genetics cause their pores to clog too easily.
  • If over-the-counter acne treatments and gentle face washing doesn’t work for you, it’s a good time to schedule an appointment with us. Cases of severe acne require a more aggressive treatment plan to prevent acne scars from occurring.
  • Acne scars can be removed with various treatments, depending on individual skin type and the severity of the spots.
  • With the grade of the wounds, another treatment method can be involved as a part of scar removal.
  • Sometimes a combination of more than one treatment can give us faster & better results in treating acne scars.
  • Anybody with acne scars can get the treatment done. ACNE SCAR has no age limit for the treatment; there are limitations with underlying conditions (if they have any health conditions where radio frequencies and lasers are not recommended.
  • All the treatment methods are discussed during the consultation).

  • Treatment can often help remove scars, but scars also tend to fade with time.
  • Effective treatment will depend partly on the type and extent of scarring and the person’s skin type.
  •
  • Most of them last a very long time, but few procedures like dermal fillers last for about a year.
  • These dermal fillers fill in the ditches and irregularities of scars, further initiating collagen production, resulting in a lesser appearance of deeper scars.
