Alopecia Areata

Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition which affects the hair follicles ultimately leading to hair loss. It is represented with distinctive bald patches on the scalp and may lead to loss of hair from the scalp as well as all the hair bearing areas on the body like , beard, eyebrows or even moustaches.

Causes Alopecia Areata

  • Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition in which the person’s immunity acts against its own hair producing cells to destroy them.
  • A strong family history is another cause responsible for alopecia areata.

Clinical Features

Alopecia areata is the most common pattern, producing:
  • Small bald patches.
  • Sudden onset of hair loss .
  • Single /multiple patches with defined margins gets larger and grow to form a bald spot.
  • Smooth appearance of the affected part of the skin
  • Another characteristic feature includes the presence of ‘exclamation mark hair’ which may be seen in alopecia areata. This means the hair looks like an exclamation mark
