Keratosis Pilaris
Keratosis pilaris is a skin condition caused by excessive accumulation of keratin in the hair follicles. Keratin is a protein that provides support , nutrition, protection to the skin and body. This accumulation plugs the duct of the follicle and leads to the appearance of small, hard, red or white bumps on the skin.
These bumps make the skin dry , rough and appears to be that of sandpaper. It is harmless and is not infectious.
Clinical Features
- Dry skin
- Small hard bumps surrounding the hair follicle
- Uneven surface with white, red or skin coloured lumps
- Rough and at times itchy skin specially on the upper arms, legs, thighs and buttocks.
- Bumps may also contain hair follicle.
Treatments
- Use of moisturising creams containing ammonium lactate for dry skin helps to reduce the effects of keratosis.
- Exfoliation: Topical exfoliants that contain urea, salicylic acid, lactic acid, alpha hydroxy acids helps to reduce the appearance of keratosis. It also aids in removing the dead cell layer from the surface of the skin.
- Topical retinoids helps to unplug the hair follicles with exfoliation.
- Laser treatment is another option for redness associated with keratosis.
